What You Need to Know About Spay and Neuter

At South Federal Animal Hospital in Ft Lauderdale, we provide multiple services to our pet community. One of our services is spaying and neutering. This routine procedure/surgery is performed in our hospital by our veterinarian Monday through Friday.

When to Spay or Neuter

The decision of when to spay/neuter is one that should be discussed with our veterinarian. Several factors must be considered, such as your pet's age and overall health.

The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

Environment

One of the main reasons to spay or neuter pets is to not contribute to the already overpopulation of unwanted animals. These animals often end up in shelters where their lifespan is short, or they are left on their own to fend for themselves, trying to find food and shelter in order to survive. Both situations are bleak.

Pet Health and Welfare

There are health reasons that make it beneficial to have a dog or cat spayed or neutered. One of those reasons is that spaying and neutering enhances a pet's health, which supports a longer and healthier life. Spaying can reduce the risk of a pet experiencing an ovarian infection and eliminates pyometra, which is a life-threatening uterine infection. Spaying also reduces the possibility of breast tumors and mammary cancer in dogs and cats.

Neutering eliminates testicular cancer since the males' testes are removed during surgery. Also, the possibility of a male dog or cat experiencing prostate cancer is minimized. Males that have not been neutered tend to display negative traits, such as spraying/marking their territory and becoming aggressive with other animals. Males also have a strong urge to find a mate, which means if they have access to the outdoors and are able, they will roam the neighborhood, putting their safety in jeopardy.
