Fleas and ticks can cause an array of problems for pets and their owners. Contact South Federal Animal Hospital in Fort Lauderdale to meet with our veterinary team at the first signs of an infestation or to receive preventative treatment for your pet. Here is information on how to keep your dog or cat flea and tick-free.

Check Your Pet for Pests Regularly

It is wise to take the time to check over your pet's coat for signs of fleas and ticks on a routine basis. This way, if they are discovered, treatment can be administered as soon as possible to remove them effectively. Part your pet's fur using your fingertips and look for black specks or moving insects running along your pet's body. Ticks can be very small but will blow up in size as they feast upon your pet's blood. Fleas are dark brown or black and can be seen running between blades of hair. Invest in a flea comb to help with the removal of fleas.

Treat Your Home Appropriately

The interior of your home can quickly become infested with fleas if they happen to jump off of your pet's body. Flea eggs can become trapped between floorboards, carpet fibers, and upon bedding, only to hatch later on. Clean your home's floors using a vacuum cleaner, mop, or broom on a routine basis to remove any eggs and larvae from the surface. Wash your pet's bedding in hot water and dry on the highest setting to kill off any eggs that remain. It is also important to treat your outdoor areas if fleas or ticks are present.
