Common Dermatology Issues in Pets
If you suspect that your pet is suffering from a skin-related issue, you should schedule an appointment with our team as soon as possible. The sooner we are able to treat, the more effective treatment will be. Here are some common causes of skin problems in pets we treat at our animal hospital:
- Parasites: Flea allergic dermatitis is the most common skin disease seen in both dogs and cats. Parasites like fleas and ticks live on your pet's skin and feed on their blood for survival. Flea and tick bites can cause allergic reactions, leading to uncontrolled scratching and skin disease. If you notice the presence of a flea or tick on your pet's skin, chances are that there are more of them, which can cause continued skin disease.
- Allergies: Allergies are seen regularly and can cause a multitude of both skin and ear conditions. The environment your pet interacts with or the food they eat may contain substances that cause an allergic reaction on your pet's skin. Symptoms of allergies include excessive scratching, licking, hair loss, and recurring skin and ear infections.
- Infections: Fungal, bacterial, yeast, and fungal infections can be seen and are frequently due to an underlying allergy. They can increase your pet's level of itching and will require oral antibiotics or antifungal medications, along with medicated baths or topical therapies.
